Kirkpatrick secures $1.7 million for Arizona flood-control projects

Efforts protect communities in Pinal, Coconino, Navajo counties

WASHINGTON – February 19, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., has secured $1.7 million in funding in the president’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget for three flood-control projects critical to rural Arizona.

In 2014, Kirkpatrick secured over $3 million for the same three Army Corps of Engineers projects that protect both public safety and private property.

Communities in Pinal, Coconino and Navajo counties have suffered from devastating floods that have inflicted millions of dollars in damages over the years, and the regions remain at risk for more catastrophic flooding in the future.

“Each of these projects is critical to its community and local economy, so I’m pleased that our hard work has led to these resources,” Kirkpatrick said. “The homeowners and small businesses throughout these regions deserve better infrastructure to protect them from catatastrophic flooding.”

Kirkpatrick secured the following in FY2017 budget:
Lower Santa Cruz River (Pinal County) – An additional $400,000 to continue the feasibility study that began in 2014.

Rio de Flag (Coconino County) – $1.25 million in work plan funds to complete work on the Clay Avenue Detention Basin, complete the Limited Reevaluation Report (LRR), and landscaping and rip rap near Butler Channel.

Little Colorado River/Winslow Levee (Navajo County) – $100,000 in the budget and $22,000 in additional work plan funds, which will keep the project on pace for completion in the next few years.
